Books of the Bible
Intro Lesson: The Origin of the Bible
Have the children fold their hands and place them in their lap or on the table in front of them. Let them know that this is a time for them to listen and to think. Ask them to repeat each phrase that you will say: (the teacher may add/share their experiences)
Lesson 1: The Books of Law/Moses (Pentateuch)
The Bible is how God speaks to us today. The recorded examples are preserved to teach, admonish and encourage us. The Bible is important because God wrote it for us, He tells us He loves us, and there are rules for us to follow so we can get to know Him better.
Lesson 2a : Historical Books (Part 1)
The historical books do not relay history merely but interpretative history. History itself is an important part of God’s self-revelation. And so as we read the historical books, we should look for more than heroes, good and bad role models and the like. We should look to see what God is saying and how His purpose is being accomplished. God is in control of history and with that we could even say that “History is His-story”.
Lesson 3 : Books of Poetry (Poetic Books)
The historical books do not relay history merely but interpretative history. History itself is an important part of God’s self-revelation. And so as we read the historical books, we should look for more than heroes, good and bad role models and the like. We should look to see what God is saying and how His purpose is being accomplished. God is in control of history and with that we could even say that “History is His-story”.
Lesson 4 : Prophetic Books – Major Prophets
Nowadays, characteristics of these prophets are still the same. God can communicate and reveal His message through preaching by our Pastors, Evangelists and even to the disciples. This shows that God never changes and He still loves and care for His people and He want them to turn from their wicked ways and seek Him.
Lesson 5a : Prophetic Books – Minor Prophets
The Minor Prophets show us a lot about having peace in our uncertain modern times. The nations question what the world is coming to. We daily see the threats, wars, famines, disasters, and financial collapse with extreme unemployment and rising debt. Yet when we come to the Lord, our Saviour, He reassures us that He is in control, sovereign, and will keep His promises of eternal peace if we draw close to Him and remain faithful.
Lesson 6 : Gospel Book – New Testament
Humans are not perfect. We break God’s laws and do things that make God angry all the time. The Bible calls this sin, and we are all sinners. When we sin and disobey God, we deserve to be punished. The Bible says that the punishment for disobeying God is death — separation from God forever in hell (Romans 6:23).
Lesson 7 : Book of Acts – Church History
As a believer we must understand that Jesus work was to bring salvation to a lost human race and He wanted it to continue through His obedient church. And the Holy Spirit is still with us today. We can’t see him, but we can hear him as he speaks to our hearts, we can see his moving in our life, and we can feel the power of his presence as he guides us through each day.
We have learned about Paul’s letters. Those letters were written for early believers long time ago. The early churches were having problems and they were needed to be reminded of what to do. Paul gives them an advice on how to live their lives as followers of Christ. The letters of Paul still applies to us today even if we lived in a new generation.
There is much we can learn from the life of the Apostle Paul. Far from ordinary, Paul was given the opportunity to do extraordinary things for the kingdom of God. The story of Paul is a story of redemption in Jesus Christ and a testimony that no one is beyond the saving grace of the Lord.
Lesson 9: General Letters (Hebrews-Jude)
Constantly reading and studying the bible is an essential part of being a follower of Jesus Christ. The Bible gives us instruction on how to discern right from wrong like how most of the General Letters gave warnings to the believers, the Bible is also a source of our strength and encouragement.
“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.” (Rev 1:3) No one knows the exact time Jesus will come because God’s timing is not our timing. Until that day, we are to point others to Jesus, so they might believe in Him, and one day go with Jesus and all believers to heaven.
