Words to Remember

  • Bold (Mapangahas/matapang) showing an ability to take risks; not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible danger; a person who is not afraid to speak up for what he believes, even to people with more power than him.
  • Boldness is our willingness to venture out and do the right thing at the right time, regardless of the barriers or fears we may encounter. It is realizing that God is in control.
  • Disciple means a “follower of”; a personal follower of Jesus during His life.

Introduction

Who is Peter?

Peter, also known as Cephas (John 1:42), was originally named Simon. Peter means “rock”. Jesus was the One Who changed Peter’s name. He was one of the first followers of Jesus Christ. He was a Galilean fisherman. He was an outspoken and ardent disciple, one of Jesus’ closest friends, an apostle, and a “pillar” of the church (Galatians 2:9). Peter was enthusiastic, strong-willed, impulsive, and, at times, impatient.

READ Matthew 14:22-33 – Jesus Walks on the Water

Main Point of the Lesson

As said on the previous lesson, Jesus wants us to follow Him. He wants us to be part of saving the world. He wants us to share the good news with everyone. You don’t need super powers to join the Jesus League. You just need to be willing to see the light and answer the call from Jesus to follow Him and let Him lead your life.

Jesus uses unlikely heroes. Peter was a fisherman from Galilee, but Jesus called him to be a fisher of men (Luke 5:10). Because Peter was willing to leave all he had to follow Jesus, God used him in great ways. As Peter preached, people were amazed at his boldness because he was “unschooled” and “ordinary.” Being with Jesus makes all the difference.

Boldness comes from the confidence we have in Christ – who He is, and what He can do. When we have confidence in our Lord, we can venture beyond our limits, abilities, and comfort zones to engage in the simple things of life-from talking to a stranger in a kind encouraging way, or sharing the Gospel with a friend. Speak up for what is right. Don’t be ashamed to share the difference Christ has made in your life.

Jesus is waiting to hear from you. Are you ready to join the Jesus League?

Activity – Keep Your Eyes on Jesus Game

– Tape “Jesus” name on the wall
– Put the bucket (empty) underneath the picture
– Have the children line up about 10-15 feet away from the bucket (distance doesn’t really matter)
– The first person in line holds the large spoon and puts the plastic egg (can use other plastic object) in it
– They have to walk the egg over to the bucket without dropping it
– The trick is – they have to keep their eyes on Jesus the entire time!!!
– If they take their eyes off of Jesus, they have to start over.
– Once they drop the egg in the bucket, they get it and go back for the next person to do it
