Lesson 2: Abraham Obeys God

Lesson 2 : Abraham Obeys God
Bible Story : The Call of Abram
Bible Scriptures: Genesis 12:1-20; 13:1-4
Objective : To show that obedience to God keeps us under God’s care.
Memory Verse : Hebrews 11:8 “It was faith that made Abraham obey when God called him to go to a country God had promised to give him.”

Introduction

Ask the class what you do to prepare to go on a journey. Encourage answers like these: prepare your clothes, say goodbye to your family and friends.

Tell the Story
Tell the bible story in your own words and by showing pictures.

Main Points of the Lesson
(Teacher should concentrate on one or two truths in this lesson so that children steadily come to know more about God)

  1. Abraham first lived in a big town. He had a wife named Sarah but had no children. They were very wealthy and comfortable. Abraham was not expecting to go off on a journey, but one day God told him to leave his home, 12:1.
  2. When you leave home, people ask you where you are going. But Abraham (or Abram as he was called then) was not told by God the name of the place he was going to. He was only told that God would show him the place.
  3. So Abraham packed everything. When he arrived in a country called Canaan along the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea, God told him this was to be his new land even though it was full of other tribes. Abraham thanked God by worshipping Him, 12:4-8.

God calls us to a lifelong spiritual journey in which we are challenged every day to make choices that reflect our love for and obedience to God. Sometimes, it means that we must give up some comfort and security. But that is the essence of faith—obeying when all we have is God’s promise.

Our Response to the Story

LOOK
Ask the children to tell about ways they were good examples during the week or how obedience brings happiness to them. Explain that we are obedient when we do what Heavenly Father, our parents, and our teachers want us to do.

LISTEN
Listening to God is like listening to anyone-before you can hear Him. You must be ready to listen. Listening to God requires a right attitude in our hearts. When you listen to God and obey Him, you will discover a life that is full and rich with purpose.

LIVE
God has promised us a new life and a place in heaven where He rules. But, we must obey Him in order to receive His promises.

Discussion Question
How did Abraham obey God?

Game/Activity

MIRROR
Ask the children to imitate an action (pat head, clap hands, etc.). When you do what I tell you to do, you are obeying. Lead children in doing other actions.

FAITH WALK
Place a few obstacles in the area. Ask for a volunteer to wear the blindfold while the other children guide them across the room, missing the obstacles. Make sure the other kids keeps the volunteer away from the obstacles he/she cannot see.

Prayer Time & Wrap-Up
Pray. Thank You, God, for helping us know ways to obey You. Help us choose to be loving and kind. Thank You for loving us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
