Introduction
Who is Barnabas?
“Joseph” (Acts 4:36) was the birth name of Barnabas. “Joseph” means “may [God] add” but the apostles gave him the name Barnabas, which means “Son of Encouragement” or “Son of Exhortation” (Acts 4:36).
The name was given to him because of his inclination to serve others (Acts 4:36-37, 9:27) and his willingness to do whatever church leaders needed (Acts 11:25-31).
He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus and first mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem. He is referred to as a “good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith.”
Through his ministry, “a great number of people were brought to the Lord” (Acts 11:24).

Main Point of the Lesson
As said on the previous lesson, Jesus wants us to follow Him. He wants us to be part of saving the world. He wants us to share the good news with everyone. You don’t need super powers to join the Jesus League. You just need to be willing to see the light and answer the call from Jesus to follow Him and let Him lead your life.
Jesus uses unlikely heroes. Barnabas was not a perfect man. But, God records the histories of men such as him to show us what great things He can do through men and women who strive to overcome their human nature and yield to Him.
Barnabas is a Christian hero. He put others first, especially in providing encouragement and exhortation. He sacrificed his wealth to help the needy. He sacrificed comfort and safety to travel and proclaim Christ in advancing the gospel. For him, the ultimate goal was bringing as many unsaved as possible to Jesus.
