Lesson 6: Praying to God
Lesson 6 : Praying to God
Bible Story : The Lord’s Prayer
Bible Scriptures: Matthew 6:5-15; Luke 11:1-4
Objective : To help children look at what it means to pray.
Memory Verse : Jeremiah 29:13 NIV “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”
Introduction
Give some examples of how one person will get other people’s attention. They can shout, wave their arms, bang a drum, and blow a horn. Get the children observations when they saw a person who is making a noise and what he is doing.
Tell the Story
Tell the bible story in your own words and by showing pictures.
Main Points of the Lesson
(Teacher should concentrate on one or two truths in this lesson so that children steadily come to know more about God)
- What is Prayer? Prayer is talking to God and listening for God to talk to us. It is opening our hearts – our fears, desires, joys and sadness – and letting God know how we feel.
- Why do we pray? We pray because we want to be close to God and God wants us to be close to Him. We want to tell God how we are feeling and we need God’s help and guidance every day to live the way He wants us to live.
- God desires to have a relationship with each of us, and an important part of any relationship is communication. God has established prayer as a means for us to communicate with Him.
- Remind the children that they can talk to God like their best friends. God wants to hear what each person has to say.
Our Response to the Story
LOOK
Why pray? It is to talk with God and to get His direction for our lives. God is so good and will help us when we are happy, sad, sick or even when we are in trouble. God will give us wisdom, strength and understanding if we only ask Him. When we pray, our relationship with God grows.
LISTEN
God is always willing to listen to our prayers.
LIVE
Trust and believe that your prayers are never wasted; that there is power in prayer.
This lesson will have more meaning if you, the teacher, can tell a story from your life of an answer to a prayer.
Discussion Question
Who do you like to talk to and about what topic you want to share/discuss?
Invite each child to thank God for one good thing that happened in the past week.
Game/Activity
TELEPHONE
Divide the kids into two groups and line them up. The first player whispers it into their neighbor’s ear a phrase “When you pray, go to your room, close the door and pray to Jesus.” This player then whispers what they heard into the next person’s ear and so forth, until everyone has heard the phrase. The last person to have something whispered into their ear, says out loud to the group what they heard, and the first player says the original phrase.
Prayer Time & Wrap-Up
Lead the children in a prayer.
Dear Lord, thank you for loving us and hearing us when we pray. Help us to learn to talk to you every day, in every situation. Thank you for answering our prayers. We love you and praise you for all you’ve done. Amen.
